Back To Low Carbing!

Low Carbers enjoy their steaks!

The last few months, well, specifically the whole summer I have not felt so good. When I went to bed at night, I couldn't lay down for a long time. I'd fall asleep sitting up in bed! Horrible feelings. Some nights I'd think I was having a heart attack. It was a very scary time. It was reminisce of December 2008 for me. During that time I felt exactly the same way! So I knew what to do.

Many low carb choices!

Twenty days ago I went back to shunning sugar and white flour products, eating only low carbs. The first week I do not know how much I lost since I was afraid to face the scale. In 2008, I started using Dr. Atkins Induction Diet and lost 12 pounds in the first week. That is a lot of weight for me to lose so quickly. I know it is water weight, but any other diet I ever used in the past never took off that much so fast. If I lost half a pound that was a milestone!

Cheese is a mainstay at 4 oz. per day!

One of the best things about eating low carbs is that within the first three days, you will not be hungry. Dr. Atkins tells you that in his book, and when you are reading it you will be thinking, "not me! I am always hungry and especially if I am trying to stick to a diet." If you follow it exactly though, he is right on with everything he tells you. The main reason you are not hungry is because you ARE eating! If you are hungry, eat more. And most important is to remember that if you think low carbs means no carbs that is NOT TRUE at all. You can eat all kinds of good carbs! Fill up! Eat until you are not hungry.

Cook up enough to snack on for the next few days!
If you love your family you will do your best to change them over to low carbs too. Why if we love our children do we feed them sugar? Sugar is the worse thing you can give anyone! In fact, in the old days they gave it to their enemies to put in their tea so they could overpower them! I did this also. It brings tears to my eyes when I see my own son putting so much sugar in his coffee every morning. I did this to him! I worry about him constantly. He laughs it off. I remember filling my freezer with ice cream sandwiches and him eating them whenever he pleased. Me filling my second refrigerator with bottles of coco cola. Me, buying his whatever sugary cereal, candy, cookies or ice cream he pleased. Going every Thursday night to Burger King.

Grow these yourself!

Not only is this way of eating good for you and your family, it is good for your budget. Yes! It is! I know when you think, "well now we will be buying expensive meats, cheeses and vegetables." Yes, but no more sugar laden white flour products. No more white breads. How much are they a loaf anyway? And exactly how many sandwiches do you have to eat to fill up? What about a steak and salad? No more potato chips or  bags of candy. But how about almonds? Walnuts? Strawberries? Blueberries?

This man was way ahead of his time!

Just make sure you keep track of those carbs! For that I use Fit Day which is a journal of your food, your goals, your weight, your feeling journal, fitness journal, etc. It is free though they do have a paid version. I love it and have been using it for some time now. I am not an affiliate of them, just a happy user. So feel free to click through and sign up and start your low carb eating. They are not set up for low carbing though, but it is usable as long as you know that. There are times I wonder why I bake my own bread. I made whole wheat for months before hubby told me it was too dry and he didn't like it. I am back to white bread now. Of course, we only eat a slice of bread each at breakfast. We rarely make sandwiches so I guess it isn't so bad.

I really need to think low carb instead of just controlled carbs.

nice post! I am proud of the way I feed my family. My mom bought junk, andsuppers were quick, homemade, but half of it consisted of something boxed, instant potatoes, rice, mac n cheese...
My grocery bill is high, but you know what? It is SO worth it to know that my fridge is chocked full and my cupboards are bare :) My kids love eating healthy and I dont have to beg or bribe.
I feel like I need to cook a porterhouse after seeing that pic!

Great post!! I did this a few years ago. I stuck with it for about a year. I'm not good at sticking to anything long term! LOL!! No matter what I'm trying, I've been using Sparkpeople.com and it is all free, too! I love the recipe sharing and nutrition calculator!!

Thank you for all the comments! Holly, I always had that problem too, but at my age, I KNEW I better take control of my health. My MIL couldn't stick to any diet either, and I watched her die of diabetes caused conditions and I did not want that for myself. So I read up on various plans and settled on the one I could definitely live with. I love it! Makes you feel so good when you get those bad carbs out.

Sugar! It IS the devil indeed, but I must admit, I invited the devil to my table after every meal. Sigh.

OOH! OOH! OOH! What time did you say supper is going to be? Lookin' GOOOD! We usually like to grill outside, but it's been too hot this summer, and now it's raining quite a bit, so I'm cooking in the house more.

God Bless!

I usually think of low carb as "doing without" but those pictures make me hungry! They don't look like doing without at all!

We are trying to focus on more wholesome ingredients. It is harder with young children but at least they like to eat fruit.

Well, it IS expensive to eat low carb if you are trying to feed a family of four. It is cheaper to fill them with rice and pasta and bread for sure. I attempt healthy meals to the unhappiness of my husband (has anyone ever gotten divorced over the wife not buying enough bread?) My oldest daughter has lost weight eating healthy so she is not the problem...the hubby and younger daughter are harder to persuade, but I keep trying.

Truth is, that it is expensive buying ANY food from the grocery stores. I buy meat in bulk and do not waste any of my grocery dollars on junk food. Junk food to me is all white flour products, anything with sugar in it and high carb foods. I do not have a big grocery budget. I admit growing and canning a lot of food has helped me cut spending money at the stores. My husband is a big eater but will eat low carb meals gladly as long as they taste good. So I cook a lot and use my low carb cook books for inspiration. It's not easy feeding families in these times.

Because of health problems, I haven't eaten any refined sugar, or any grains at all in the last eight years. I actually have trouble keeping my weight high enough!

It's so good to hear about your experiences before I try this out on my own. And I LOVE fitday.com to keep track of what I'm eating and my daily exercise. I think it keeps me from going down that slippery slope of weight gain. Thanks so much for the insight!

Thanks for this post. Yours is the first one I have come across on a blog. I have off and on done the Atkins and I always loose weight. This is so timely because I had made up my mind that tomorrow I would start. It is actually one of the easiest diets I have ever been on and it is successful when others were not. I am a slow loser too. Nothing has ever done what Atkins has done for me.

What veggies do you feel are the best to use. I love to have a salad and eat lots of chef salads, they are so easy and I can get in all I want and not be starving when I am done.

Thanks!

I did Atkins years ago, and,it worked too, long as I did MY work of eating low carb, but,I got LAZY and it was EASIER to pop a bag of chips open and eat away,or,grab a pizza for our dinner!Well, that was all great UNTIL I got ON my scales and they ,even,CRIED!!!LOL I COULDN'T believe the numbers. Then, we had some major 'issues' in our family and I was so concerned that I COULDN'T eat,so,one day while pushing the food around on my plate when out with hubby, thought to myself,WHY NOT USE this situation to DO something ABOUT my weight, and, from that day on,I started reading Atkins,Eades,South Beach...anything Low Carb I could get my hands on,and, doing research on the Internet and collecting recipes and 'speaking' on Low Carb blog sites, and,it CLICKED!!!NOW,after 4 months I'm 54 lbs. lighter and feeling better everyday!I've got about 63 more lbs. to lose but I'm on my way, and, 'nothins gonna stop me, now'!!! (It may slow down, but, long as I eat this way, and, add in some walking and drinking water, "I think I can"!!!!
Thanks for your positive and encouraging words and thank you for this site, too!!
