Live Your Life To Be Self-Sufficient,

Religion and politics. Now everyone knows that you should not discuss either with other people, whether they are friends, family or online friends. Dangerous territory. I have been watching for few months now, how "preppers" (people who are doing what they call "prepping," which is making preparations for an emergency.) use both, to build a following and justify whatever they say or do. Most of them are just about guns and storing bulk foods. I belonged to two such groups on Facebook, and found they are not anywhere close to a homesteader.

Homesteading is what I do. It is living your life by being self-sufficient as much as possible in this crazy, rush-rush world. Prepping is mainly buying stuff to store, learning as much as you can about what you would do if something in fact, really did happen, and storing ammo and guns. They are much more political and religious (legal type religion)  than homesteaders are. They promote the fact that they don't want all these laws and yet, they are the very ones who push their beliefs and rules on everyone else. That is just like the government they say they are fighting against.

Instead of stocking up on bags of beans, rice and wheat, since we do not eat any of that, we grow a lot of vegetables and buy local meat which I can. I make soups, stews, chili and can it all up. I make a variety of main dish entrees that are canned for future meals. I do not dwell on the scare tactics of the government to get you doing what they want, because they have scared you into doing it. Instead just take one day at a time. Do what you can for your family.

If you are living your life to be self-sufficient, preparing is already part of it. It is not something you just start doing and will only use it in an emergency. You will use it every day. It will be your daily routine. Then if there is an emergency of some sort, you will have food stored, you will have a wood stove with a load of firewood, you will have food growing in your garden, you will be prepared. Nothing to get alarmed over. Just your day to day life. Not going to break out the bag of beans and rice you were saving for this occasion and discover that you hate it. Or wondering if you have enough water stored. Or trying to figure out how to start your generator that is still in the box it was bought in. Learn to homestead instead. And do it NOW!

Don"t Let Anyone Laugh At Your Self-Sufficient Lifestyle

Peaceful Forest Homestead In Fall

Prepping has become big business now. We all know why! Our economy is getting worse with each day. If you think preparing is silly because you have seen television shows that make fun of it, then you are silly! Television is a way that the masses of people can be programmed to buy certain products, believe propaganda and basically sit back and do nothing. I am not a person who usually speaks against television on my blogs, because I know so many people love it. I have lived without it for over 13 years now. That is why I think my husband and I have our own opinions, not influenced by what we see on television.

Life Depends On Which Road You Choose!

We are on the computer a lot, and you could say we are influenced by sites we go to, or what others write on the internet. The difference is, that there is more places to research what you read. Then you can find out if what you are reading is true, current, or nonsense. You can decide what your opinion is based on your research. Everyone is entitled to make their own choices in life. One wrong choice can change your life. Of course, when you make the choice, at that time, you have no way of knowing. Later, you know.

Grow A Garden!

Don't let anyone tell you that growing a garden, storing food and supplies and being independent is wrong or silly. We all see those people who laugh at what you do, or when you say that you are homesteading. They have no clue what it means. Otherwise, they wouldn't be laughing at you! You should laugh at them when they are in a pickle, and have nothing to eat, or heat to keep warm. But you won't. You will probably help them, and so you should. In that way, next time, they will have prepared. They will have learned from you.

Ground Beef and Chicken

Not only storms and power outages will cause you to live in emergency mode, but the loss of jobs or the loss of the income source in your household. Cutting back means buying the food your family eats, not what a list of preppers tell you to buy. If you do not eat breads and grains, don't store it. If you are a vegetarian, don't store meat. If you do not eat sugar, do not store it or make a lot of jams, jellies and preserves. Store what you eat. It is a waste of time and money to grow, process (can, dehydrate, freeze, ferment) or buy foods you don't eat or don't think are healthy. Make smart choices and you will be thankful later on!

Free Kindle eBook Today, A Tale Of Two Preppers

When I read this eBook a couple of weeks ago, it was like a wake up call. Time to do all the things I had been planning to do, but hadn't gotten around to yet. To be honest, I worry about the readers of my blog who do not do that. They write in the comment section how they want to do that someday! This eBook brings home the idea that now is the time to do it! How many times do we say, I want to prepare, but I just haven't gotten around to it yet?

Sue Gregersen is a fellow homesteader, that I know slightly from Homesteading Today, a homesteading forum I belong to. I have read two of her books so far, and she keeps you glued to the book until you finish it. A Tale Of Two Preppers is well written and easy to follow. Her characters, a young married couple, are real people and they reminded me of some of the people I have met online. They live in a city and didn't even know how to cook. Taking turns bringing home take-out was the extent of their meal preparations each day.

One thing this book does is to open your eyes to what could happen in this world we live in. How would you eat? What would you do if you could not go outside your apartment for a long period of time? In my mind, I pictured this city as NYC, but it could have been any city. How many people are not prepared in the least?  This book gave me ideas on things that I am not prepared for. I made a list after reading this book and started finishing up on some preparations I had already started.

Today her book is available in the kindle store on Amazon for FREE. If you do not have a kindle, that does not matter. Here is the Free App From Amazon so you can read kindle books on your computer. You don't have to buy anything. Just be sure to order this book today, while it is FREE!

Preparing Is Not A Bad Thing To Do!

Nikita checks out the paddock after a tornado hit us!

"Preppers" is now a word that makes others think of someone holding a gun to their head as they try to steal your food. I believe that word has become a tag due to the television show, "Doomsday Preppers."  I will say that I have never seen the show so I am not reviewing it here. For one thing, serious preparing for natural disasters is highly recommended. Do I believe God will take care of me? Yes, I do.God is the one that gave me the brains to prepare.

Over 300 trees came down on our property in less than 5 minutes!

Being a person who stores food for the future does not mean you are a bad Christian. It does not mean you are planning on killing people or have a mine field on your front yard. What it means is that if your husband was in an accident and you had no money coming in, there would be food to eat. If your spouse and you broke up, you would have food to eat and hold you over until you could figure out what to do. If you lost your job and had no money coming in, your family would not starve. If there was  a bad storm and you could not drive down your road for a period of time, you would have food to serve your family. If the trucking companies went on strike over gas prices or their job contracts or whatever, you would be able to eat.

Growing Your Own Food Is The First Step!

Now the other thing everyone talks about is the fact that a "prepper" is looking forward to the end of the world. Well, if that was so, why would they bother to prepare? Are you looking forward to having an accident because you have insurance? Of course not! If you are not growing a garden and preserving food and something did happen where you could not get food at a store would you be going to someone's house for food? Or would be you waiting for someone to come to your door with a bag of food? FEMA's site tells that it is your responsibility as a citizen to provide for yourself and your own family. They cannot get to everyone in times of natural disasters.

No Neighbors!

Now if someone came to your house today, trying to steal your vehicle or break in, would you hold them off with your loaded shotgun or other gun? Or would you just stand by and let them do what they want with  your property and possibly your family? No, you would assert ownership by protecting all with your gun. Just because a television show plays up this fact tying it with people who prepare for emergencies is no reason to look down on them.

In all actuality, the people in the cities will be one who will have hardest time in any situation where the stores are not an option. Or where they cannot access their water or utilities. Out in the country you can make things work. Most people in the country grow a garden, have a well, and may have stocked up their pantries due to being prepared in case of emergencies. In the case where something big happens, most people who prepare will be providing not only for themselves, but for a neighbor (if they have any), and possibly for their family members. Now if everyone would prepare for their own families, there wouldn't be such a disagreement over such a term. Nobody said you have to do it, but you should!
