Two Holidays Down, One More To Go!

Christmas

Two holidays down and one more to go. New Years Day is the easiest of them all in my opinion. Though the other two are no big deal to me anymore. Funny about that. Holidays always caused me more stress than anything else through out the whole year. I can pinpoint it starting the first year I was with my first husband. He was Jewish and having never grown up with Christmas as part of his life he embraced all the holiday routines. Decorations, holiday foods, meals, Christmas parties and the gifts! Oh yes, he loved the buying of the gifts more than anything else. He would buy gifts for everyone. Even his business clients. My family would come to my house on Christmas Day and it looked like a dream. In reality it was not for me. Buying presents for others stressed me out. Not from the financial aspect but the actual going to the crowded stores and finding something that person would like. I had no trouble buying for my son but everyone else presented a problem to me. When my mother's health became bad she would mail me a check and tell me to buy everyone presents from her and my father. Oh boy, just what I wanted to do!

Surprising Mom with a colored television!

Truthfully the best Christmases I remember were the ones before I grew up. Or the time my parents and brother came to my apartment for Christmas Eve. After my parents left to drive home my brother and my son and I went in his car to my parents' house to beat them there. When they arrived home, we were quietly sitting in their house in the dark. My mother turned on the lights and there we were. Also there was a big color television sitting there in place of their small black and white one! My brother had found it for sale used at a good price and we got it for their Christmas present. They loved it.! On the drive there my brother kept pointing to the sky and saying he saw Santa in his sleight. My son was soon saying he saw them too. He was so excited. It was one of my fondest memories.

My brother, Mickey in his wild west show in Harpursville, NY

When we were children our Christmas gifts were usually a few toys, a book or two and some clothing. Usually pajamas. We always got the same number of presents. Yet almost every year, I would get the biggest present because it was doll and one year a doll house. My brother would just grab that big one and open it himself before my parents could stop him. Every year I got a new doll. My brother who is two and half years older than me always got things related to cowboys, guns and race cars. He is still into cowboys and guns to this day. He builds black powder guns and makes buckskin clothing for himself. He has a wild west show with a group of others who put on shows at a variety of places during the summer and fall.  So those interests have always stayed with him. I will add that he is a very unique brother and has always been so (even though he always opened my dolls!).

Decorated my door with mostly Christmas Cards I received.

My Christmas has changed in the last few years to being a really quiet day and not doing much of anything except decorating my door and giving out cards to the people who live in my building. I am quite happy with it this way because it not a stressful time for me now. No spending money on presents that nobody wants. Remember those gift boxes of talcum powder or bubble bath? Those were the gifts you got when someone had to give you a gift and didn't know what to give you. I can picture them in the store now. I do not know if they still sell stuff like that now or not. I buy myself whatever I want all year long so I don't need to get any presents. Nor do I cook a Christmas meal. This year I had Keto Chow salted caramel ice cream that I added pumpkin spice to. Later in the day I had a large rib-eye steak. Perfect for Christmas Day! No big clean up job. No stress of whether someone liked a present I bought them. My son lives upstairs and he came down a few times but he is not into Christmas either.

The thing about living alone and being alone on a holiday is that it really is no big deal........unless YOU make it a big deal. Fretting about it months in advance causes you to dread the day so much. Becoming depressed because you are alone. It is just a day like any other day. If you have a pet you aren't alone. I know I still have to care for my pet like I do every day. Pets don't know it is Christmas or that you are going to buy them a bunch of presents. But you can if you choose to do so. I think they like it better if you stay home whether you get them presents or not. I buy this little boy so much stuff all the time so he doesn't have to wait for Christmas to get any gifts. In fact, he slept most of the day........

Holiday Time Is Coming

Streets are decorated for Christmas!

This is the time of the year when people get depressed. Worrying seems to affect most people and the holidays seem to make it more difficult. I have lived through times like that myself. Looking at some of my old journals, I see where I wrote about families everywhere enjoying a Thanksgiving dinner and we did not have enough money to buy anything. Just the canned foods that I had grown in my garden. If you are so far behind on all your credit bills that all the money coming in goes to them, you have none left over for living expenses. Now I do not have those problems. I am by no means rich or even well off, but I am comfortable where and how I live now. The difference is that I am in charge of my money and what I do with it. I didn’t even have a grocery budget! Now I do. I remember when I read about what to do to cut expenses. I would say to myself, "I already did that a long time ago.”

My vintage Christmas decorations are old!

Instead of dreading the holidays, I embrace them. I decorate my apartment for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. I do not have to spend much money as most of my decorations I already had. I can make special foods and share with my neighbors, my son and my boyfriend. Nothing has to be expensive or time consuming. Just little things shared with loved ones can be the most meaningful. For Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year's Day though, you do not have to spend money. That is the marketing strategy behind the commercialism of the holidays. When I was a child growing up, my parents did not spend a lot on decorations or our presents. Many years later after we had grown up and had our own children, I saw my parents go overboard on buying presents for their grandchildren. It was wasted money as far as I was concerned. Children having so many presents that they don't know which one to play with first is crazy.

Make a nice dinner even if alone!

If you are sad or alone on the holidays, I know it can be a hard time for you. Maybe you can reach out to someone who needs a friend during the holidays too. Have a potluck dinner with several people who are alone on those days. Last year, I did not know what to expect having just moved here. I am so blessed by the other people who also live in my building. For the most part, they are very caring and loving people. Also the city I live in has churches and organizations providing holiday dinners and socialization for the less fortunate. Not just financially, but people who are alone for one reason or another.

Christmas tree from the thrift store!

No matter what you are worried about, it will eventually pass. I know this because I thought my worries were the kind that would be with me for the rest of my life. I did reach that light at the end of the tunnel. I call it the tunnel of worry. Of course, to do so, you most likely have to make changes in whatever is causing you to worry and be depressed. Losing the people you love, even years ago, will haunt you at the holidays. It just does because they are no longer here with you. Instead of becoming depressed about your loss, think about their value to your life. Think about the good memories you shared with them. Think about how much they meant to you without becoming depressed about it. Since I enjoy writing, I like to write in my journal about things we did together. My memories of them. Things they said to me. Places we went together. Our happy times. Not my memories of them in a hospital bed. If that is all you picture in your mind then it is no wonder you are so depressed.

Make your holidays special for YOU!

No matter what you feel for these holidays. It is just a day. I have found in my life that being around negative people affects me. I am basically a happy type of person. Both of my parents were like that. My mother taught me to make a list of pros and cons of each situation and figure out from there how to change it. Which is what I always do. Sometimes you cannot change your situation to your dream of what it should be. But little changes you can do now will help. If no matter what you will be alone on the holiday, make it your day. Play music, make a fantastic dinner with leftovers, drink wine or whatever, prepare or buy a sinful dessert for after dinner with a special coffee drink and watch some I Love Lucy shows. Laugh a lot!

I Am Looking Forward To Fall and the Holidays

Beginning of fall colors in NY state

Fall is here. Holidays are coming. I am happy about both. Happy? More like excited. I can decorate. I can make a holiday for my friend, my son and I. Just like we used to have when he was younger. I used to go all out for Christmas all the years he was growing up. After his dad and I broke up, not so much. Now he lives a block away and we can celebrate holidays together again. Now living in an apartment building for seniors, I don't really expect to have trick or treaters for Halloween. But you never know, so I will at least buy a bag of candy, just in case. And then there is Thanksgiving! Which I am really looking forward to. I will write more about that is a future post.

Light and airy in my apartment

I am waiting for the fall colors to brighten up a bit and then I will take some good pictures to share the beautiful NY fall with my readers. As much as I loved the colors of the trees as they changed, in NY, it means cold weather is coming. Dark days and a lot of work in my previous house. I lived with wood stoves and an alternative energy system, which depended heavily on solar.....sun. Not easy at that time of the year. Being dark as early as five and sometimes earlier. Living here in my new apartment, this will not be a problem. I will have plenty of lighting and no wood stoves for heat. Snow removal is included in our rent here, so nothing I have to concern myself with.

The Parking Lot

The hardest thing, I believe I will have to deal with, will be walking with my rolling walker in the snow. I am guessing that my ramp and parking lot here will be completely plowed out to the surface. So it would not be a problem getting out of my building and to the parking lot. I have to believe the other parking lot behind the stores on Broad Street, will also be plowed out pretty good since it is a city parking lot. So hopefully, I will be able to use my walker all the way to the stores on Broad Street. Most of the time though, my friend will be driving me to the store. I would not take a chance on falling due to icy conditions.

Air Conditioner and Electric Heater

I will be exchanging air conditioning for heating. So I imagine my bills will remain the same. I have not done too bad on using air conditioning. I have it on all the time because I am always hot. So I like to keep my apartment cool and only turn it down when someone is here, who can't take it that cold. My maintenance man is going to put silicone on my windows when he takes out the air conditioner. I have not been able to open and close them myself. In winter, I would like to be able to open them at least a little bit. Need some air, even if it is cold.

Rabbit last year at the house keeping warm.

I am not too worried about being cold. My building is an old school building and built with brick. It will hold the heat well. I have a cedar chest full of afghans crocheted by my mother and these things keep you really warm. Plus I have heavy robes, nightgowns, sweaters and sweatshirts. Did I mention I am a hot person? Yes, usually I am too hot rather than too cold. The electric heaters are the baseboard type, so Rabbit can get as close as he wants. He seemed to like the wood stove in the winter time at my house. We are ready!

First sign of fall!

Memories To Remember

Our three little girls grazing on the lawn.

Sharing memories with your spouse, your children, your parents, siblings and friends are the cornerstone of your relationships. Those memories are like a link back to times shared with each of them. A special time that you and each of those people remember. It is not limited to people though. I have many special memories spent with my animals too. I find that animals have even better memories than many people.

My husband, Larry and I traveled for a period of time in an over-the-road truck in 1995-97. We went all over the country. Shared this experience making memories that nobody else, but Larry has with me. Like the time we were snowed in at a truck stop with other truckers and travelers in the state of Washington. Or the time we were stuck without loads in Denver for three days, and we hung out with the other company drivers. Or the time we visited Elvis's house museum, Graceland in Memphis. Great memories!

The unique memories, inside jokes and past conversations is what gives you a relationship with anyone. Even if you meet someone for the first time on a a subway or share a table in a busy restaurant and later run into that person............you have a connection. I have reconnected in this last year with my old friends from my schools in Crescent City and Flagler Beach, Florida. I share many unique memories with each of these friends. From riding the school bus together, swooning over the Beatles when they first appeared on the music scene, to hanging out in the hula huts along the pier on Flagler Beach or driving the famous Daytona Beach in a car full of friends. It was an instant re-connection as soon as we sent that first "add as a friend" request.

In a couple of weeks we will be going to our annual family reunion. It is the 30th year of the Lupole reunion. This year my husband will be videotaping it to preserve these precious memories. The memories of the oldest generation all the way to the newest generation. Memories in the making for sure! So we are planning ways to make this a family reunion remembered by making the videotape into a dvd memento for all.

You can create these special memories on purpose. Create those moments and family traditions that will live on. In my own family, my parents weren't into the holiday traditions so much since both of my parents worked. But when I had my son, I wanted him to have a traditional Christmas like in books and on television. So I created it. By the time my brother had his children, our family considered my home to be the place everyone went for Christmas dinner. His kids wouldn't have had a real Christmas if not for me. So I created memories for them all. And my own parents, as they got older, looked forward to Christmas at my house even though they had never done it themselves.

I will write more on memories in a future post.................but on ways to create some really awesome memories for your family and friends. Memories that your children can take with them!
