Pets Are The Best Companions

Spots

Almost everybody has a pet, some more than just one. When you take in a pet it appears like you are doing it for the pet, but no, it is actually for you. A pet adds so much to your home and your life. You are never alone. Even if you are going through something bad, like a death in the family or a divorce, or some other tragic event.....your pets will still need you to care for them. They keep you focused so you cannot let the dark hole of depression swallow you up.

Mickey and Carrots

When you are a child, having a pet is fun and it teaches children to care about someone other than themselves. If the pet is the family pet, then everyone shares in the care of it.......or that is how it should be. If it is one child's pet alone, than that child should care for it as much as possible with adult supervision, of course. When I was growing up things were so different from today. In my house our dog ate leftovers, no bought dog food. That was fine in those days and in our house, I was a "finicky" eater, so we had plenty of leftovers. My parents were not the kind that made you clean your plate.

Silver

After we moved to Florida in 1962, I was allowed to get my first cat. He was an orange kitten I named Tiny. My brother and I soon had an assortment of pets after that. Cats.........lots of cats, hamsters and a pet rabbit. Her name was Carrots, and my brother brought her home from school one day. I kind of forgot about Carrots until the day a white rabbit showed up in my barn many years later. I had a pet red hen who bonded closely with me and she was a pet that I enjoyed very much. Of course, everyone who reads my blog here, know about my horses and my beloved dog, Nikita Blackwolf, who passed away in 2013.

Nikita

Getting a puppy taught me a lot more about dogs than I had ever known. I never had one of my own as an adult. Getting Nikita in the winter of 1998 when she was just 6 weeks old was a learning experience for me. She was with me more, because I was home with her and my husband was driving an over the road truck. He was only home on the week-ends, but she adored him right from the start. Boy, did this puppy test my patience! She needed a lot of attention at that time. I trained her quickly though and she turned out to be an extremely intelligent dog her whole life. Sometimes I wondered if she was training me instead!

Rabbit, my house bunny

One area I see that pets are essential is for people who live alone. A pet gives you someone to talk to and care for. I know for me, living alone, I have my pet rabbit to be responsible for. To feed him and clean his cage. Although he does not live in the cage, being a free roaming bunny. When I go anywhere, I am aware of not leaving him home alone too long. I like to keep my apartment clean and uncluttered for his safety. Other pet owners who live in my building have pets, mostly dogs and cats. The dog owners have to walk the dogs outside and that is good for them too, getting them outside for fresh air several times a day. Whatever pet you choose, they will give you more love than you could ever imagine and are well worth the work and time. Plus, if you are living alone, they truly become your companion.

Rabbit Loves A Challenge

Rabbit

I wrote in my previous posts about our pet rabbit. I learn from him (and all my pets actually) every day (I call it  Pet Lessons.). He loves a challenge! He will keep at something over and over until he accomplishes it. Many people don't do that. Rabbit hated the bathroom being blocked off from him. I had put a board in front of the door (that I thought he couldn't jump over.......silly me!) and he kept sizing it up for a jump. Soon he was over it and I took the board down. One challenge over, time for a new one.

Working with Rabbit

Our stairs are pretty steep in our house. Sometimes, I can't go up them due to my bad knees. I never pictured Rabbit going up and down the stairs. Soon he was halfway up. A few days later, he was all the way up. He hasn't gone back up there, but I think when my husband moves his studio up there, Rabbit will up there a lot more. He likes to lay near my husband's feet (like a dog does) when he is on the computer. The thing I learned is to never give up. This little guy has been through a lot in his short life. Does it hold him back? Nope. He does what he must to accomplish whatever he is trying to do.

Jumping Down

The day before yesterday, Rabbit had a new goal. He wanted to jump onto my husband's lap while he was on the computer. He tried twice, but fell. Both times my husband wasn't paying attention to him and wasn't able to help him. Rabbit kept at it until he jumped right up on his lap. He bumped his head on the desk, but he was very happy to have made it. After that, he concentrated on the jump down. He didn't want my husband to put him down. He had to do it himself. Then it was up and down a few times that day. His day yesterday, was a whole other story which I will share soon.

Time Passes At Peaceful Forest Homestead

Our backyard!

Today, was three weeks ago that my little girl, Nikita passed away. It is also seven months ago today, that my father passed away. Both are missed and thought of every day. My father of course, did not live with me. When he was in the hospital dying, I did not have the time to properly grieve for him. I was the one making all the decisions for him and trying to do the right thing by him. My niece was causing me so many problems, as was her boyfriend too. So I spent my energy on senseless problems. Instead of what mattered.

The horses playing in the snow!

Animals basically live their life only focused on today. Not what might happen tomorrow, next week, next month or next year. Maybe they are living for the moment or maybe not? We see the birds planning ahead when they first arrive back to our home in the spring. They are expected any day. They will rest those first few days back. Often we spot the first robins resting in the tree tops around our homestead. Singing their familiar song, which is what usually alerts us to the fact that they are back home. Soon they are onto family planning and building nests.

Hobo hanging out last summer in a planter!

Our cats here live the way they want. They come and go all day long. In and out, in and out. Push me toward their food dish, even if it isn't empty, which it never is. Get on a lap if possible. Sleep all day. Go outside if they feel like it. If it is cold, they might go out to go potty and then come back in. Or they can use the indoor litter box if they so choose, which Callie does. Their whole world is right here. They are not wanderers and stay close here. They are all older cats now, Callie and Patches are both 13 this year. Hobo is younger, but I am not sure exactly what her age is.

My husband on Dark Shadow, in 2003. Nikita was never far behind!

Just like a garden, our life passes by too. It is important to pay attention to each and every member of your family. Including your precious pets. Their lives are so short. Take lots of pictures and tell everyone what you want them to know. I have no regrets there. Nikita spent almost every hour of her day with me. I talked to her all the time. She understood me perfectly. My husband was "her" person. She loved him so much and showed him constantly, just how much. He, and my son, both. gave her a lot of attention. Maybe she was an "old lady" in dog years, but she was dearly loved and knew it. Now life goes on..........

Hot, Humid Weather Slows Us Down

Sunlight hitting the garden daily!

We are not alone in this sweltering heat. People all over the country are trying to keep cool. Trying keep their gardens and critters watered. Our dog is the one suffering the most. She can hardly take the normal hot weather, this is extreme for her. Even my cats are laying low, sleeping on the bare floors. The horses don't leave the barn much at all. If they do, they go right back in the barn.

 The water supply!

Thankfully, our well is holding up. We know it is a shallow well and have never had it go dry in all the years we have been here. But that doesn't mean it couldn't.

 The forest surrounds us.

For us, this is a long time without rain. Being surrounded by thick forest is a cause for concern though. A fire could start very easily. Even our lawn this week, has some brown spots on it. Hopefully, we will get one of the long all day rains soon. NY usually has a lot of rain, and if we get it soon, I promise not one word of complaint from me! Hope everyone gets some soon.

Our Dog Hates Dog Food!

Home canned meat can be fed to your dog!

This is the instructions for feeding dogs on our can of dog food.

"Daily Feeding Guide (An individual dog's requirements may differ from this guide. Adjust quantities appropriately for your dog. Puppies can be fed up to 1-1/2 times the highest amount listed in their category): Weight of Dog Toy Up to 10 lbs: 1/3 to 3/4 cans per day; Small 10 to 25 lbs: 3/4 to 1 2/3 cans per day; Medium 25 to 50 lbs: 1 2/3 to 2 3/4 cans per day; Large 50 to 75 lbs: 2 3/4 to 3 3/4 cans per day; Large/Giant 75 to 150 lbs: 3 3/4 to 6 1/3 cans per day. Mixing with Dry? Replace 1/4 can for each 1/3 cup of dry food. (1 can = 13.2 oz, 1 cup = 8 oz measuring cup.) Storage & Care: Serve at room temperature. Refrigerate unused portion (up to 3 days). Always ensure your dog has an adequate supply of fresh water."

Do people really feed their dogs this much dog food?  Our dog doesn't really like any dog food. She tolerates it if she must. But 2 3/4 to 3 3/4 cans of dog food for a large dog? That seems pretty excessive to me. Of course it is good for the dog food manufacturer to put that on the can to encourage everyone to feed their dog as much as that processed food as possible.

I buy it for her just to have it on hand when I can't give her meat. She is not one to eat leftovers such as spaghetti or vegetables. Nikita is very fussy and will only eat what she wants. Don't tell me to not feed her until she will eat the processed stuff..........she will let it sit. Besides would you want to be forced to eat food that you cannot stand? No? Neither would I.

Hard Times Even On A Homestead

My horses

It's hard for me to write this for you this morning. Things are not good here at Peaceful Forest. I'm not sure how much longer I will be able to keep up with writing this. Stress leads to depression and once you get to the point I feel that I am at it is down hill from there. I have given all I could and I have no more left in me.

So I wonder what happens to a person's pets and other animals when they die? Are they sent to live in the city with somebody who thinks they want them because they loved you? Or your animals were so unique that they want them for that reason? They make a dog who has never been on a leash or chained or had to watch out for crazy traffic live in the city? A dog who lived in a house in the middle of the forest most of her life? She was born in a house that used to be part of a farm and wasn't even on a road. Or does she end up in a shelter waiting for someone to adopt her? Living in a cage with a bunch of other dogs? My dog would just die.

I guess three of my cats could be just left to go wild. They know the woods and could probably survive. I don't know how they would make it through a winter out here though. During the winter, they are used to a warm, cozy house, heated by a big wood stove. My other cat being 16 and suffering from Hydrothyroidism would probably be put to sleep. She is a Siamese cat and is very beautiful and pretty active. Enough so that she goes outside daily but doesn't go too far.

Then it finally comes down to the final three animals we have. Horses. Everybody loves horses. My horses are very beautiful and at first look, everybody would want them. My stepson rides my one of my horses. At first he would probably want her and knowing him, the other two also. He has a very kind heart and especially for those three. As all horse people know horses are not easy. Or cheap. These three are very spirited girls. He would not have any place to keep them. Also he would never be able to afford them. He can barely take care of his own dog. How would he manage with three horses?

I feel very strongly about the fact that I don't want them separated - ever. Especially the two big horses. They are so close to each other. I just would not want to do that to them. They have some emotional baggage from where they came from. They are all three related to each other. I promised them that they would never be separated, and I have to keep that promise. They trust me.

So my guess would be, that if you knew you were not going to live the best thing would be to just go out and shoot all your animals. Cats and all. Then you could bury them too.

Pets Rule Our House!

I told you the other day that my stepson had brought his dog to my house, and we found he was infested with fleas. We had him come pick the dog up because we did not want our animals to get fleas. He was not happy with us. Said his dog did not have fleas and there wasn't a flea in his house. Come on! His cousin who lives with him has a little puppy and they are very susceptible to fleas and worms. He told us when he brought his dog to our house that he had just been treated for fleas.

Patches

So I guess my question is if a cat could get fleas from a dog? They say they are different kinds of fleas.  One of my four cats, Patches has fleas now. She has long hair and is a very sensitive cat. She will only eat one brand of dry cat food (Purina) and that is all. No canned food and definitely no people food! Patches is my biggest cat but she is the most shy. Most people that come regularly to our home, have never seen her. Most of the time she hides upstairs. If a car pulls in she growls and runs upstairs. If she is outside when they arrive she stays hidden in the woods until they leave. My best friend has never seen her and she has been here many times.

Nikita

If our dog, Nikita barks at anything Patches growls and goes upstairs. Luckily Nikita is not a barker. She likes the element of surprise. She is a big black dog and will walk up to anyone during the night and they would not see her until it was too late. If she does bark all our other animals go on alert. The horses come running up to the front fence. One of our horses intimidates also. We are well protected.

My problem with the fleas is that I will not use the chemical repellents. I am very much against chemical use in animals and the home. I am trying to rid my home of chemicals, aluminum and plastic. That is easier said than done. I found a couple of various natural products to use except that cats don't accept anything easily. The best way I found to protect us from fleas and ticks is to keep our lawn mowed and paths as well. I tuck my pant legs into my socks when I go out in the forest. Peppermint essential oil on my hair and clothing helps with the deer flies and other flying insects. I don't think it is good for cats though.
